It's said breakfast is the most important meal of the day but who can focus on anything besides trying to get the coffee maker working, let alone trying to butter toast or find your face. But lunch, now that's a meal I can greet with all my faculties, if not fully intact, at least working for the greater benefit of propelling my body through the rest of the day. We think so much of lunchtime in this city we even have a huge noon horn that goes off faithfully. People may say "Let's do lunch" by which they mean "I'm brushing you off," but who cares, since all I need to do lunch is $10, less talk and more chewing. Here are some of my favourites.
SCIUE
As they say, when in Rome, skip the Forum and eat the pizza. Or something like that. Billed as Roman fast food, this place would've been the equivalent of a chariot drive-thru for Nero in ancient days. Amazing flat-breaded pizzas freshly baked daily, priced by weight as you select the amount you want chopped off. Try the Cartaginese with chilis, parsley, garlic, olive oil and anchovies, the Caprese with tomato sauce, mesclun greens, bocconcini and sliced tomatoes, the pancetta, mozzarella and gorgonzola shindig, the Pollo Pesto, a pepperoni creation with roasted red, green and yellow peppers and an intriguing Egiziana with sliced potatoes, cumin, onion, olive oil and tomato. There are also savoury paninoteca sandwiches featuring roasted-pork loin or lamb, as well as lasagna, meat or spinach-and-ricotta cannelloni, homemade gnocchi and a daily pasta.
